Sanilhac is near Uzès, located in the department of Gard which is part of the Languedoc-Roussillon area of Southern France. This diverse region stretches from the French Catalonia on the Spanish border near the Pyrénées along the Mediterranean coast as far as the Cèvennes and encompasses 5 departments, being Lozère, Gard, Hérault, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales.
Gard, on the doorstep of Provence is famous for its Papal city of Avignon and the Roman towns of Nîmes and Arles, along with the Camargue, famed for its white horses, gypsies, salt lakes and the perfectly intact fortified town of Aigues-Mortes. Lovely wide sandy beaches ring the coastline at the pretty fishing village of Grau du Roi further east at Stes. Maries-de-la-Mer.
Uzès 7kms away, with its lively provençal markets at the Place aux Herbes, its famous narrow streets framed by handsome ancient restored stone merchant houses, antique shops, festivals throughout the year and its “Neo-Provençal” culture has a distinctly different feel to its neighbouring towns. Two of the main landmarks are the Tour Fenestrelle, an elegant Romanesque tower just a few steps from the cathedral and the old ducal palace.
Visit the Mediterranean beaches of Grau du Roi, Grande Motte, Palavas or the pretty coastal town of Sète by car, all reached within 1 hour from our Sanilhac house. Le Cap d’Age with its famous lively beaches lies just beyond Sète. Travel east to the Luberon with its lush lavender fields near Mont Ventoux and Sault. Gordes, Apt and other nearby tiny provençal villages can be reached by car within 1 hour. A little further are Marseilles, Aix-en-Provence and the western Cote D’Azur coastal towns and villages.
Go further inland and you will find yourself in the luscious green hills of the Cévennes landscape, well worth exploring.
